Someone inspired me to quote this today:

"Art gives man a reminder that he is not just a consumer but a creator as well. It awakens in him the urge to struggle and perform great deeds; it fills him with the craving to pass on the Promethean fire to generations to come".

“My only wish is…to transform friends of God into friends of man, believers into thinkers, devotees of prayer into devotees of work, candidates for the hereafter into students of the world, Christians who, by their own procession and admission, are "half animal, half angel" into persons, into whole persons.”

Ich lebe mein Leben in wachsenden Ringen,
Die sich über die Dinge ziehen.
Ich werde den letzten vielleicht nicht vollbringen,
aber versuchen will ich ihn.

@Atma :
Schopenhauer was quite cruel, too. He has once beaten his house-keeper quite
badly.

Humankind is the crown of creation (?).

Well, surviving always includes doing harm to others. And I´d say it´s worse
to harm a human than to hurt an animal.

Animal-rigths can only exist in a society that is without any great problem.

And I think vegetarianism isn´t the "right" way - we are born `omnivores`.
Naturally born killers. :D

Well, I think it's bad to hurt anyone no matter if it's animal or human (tho, we are all animals).

I don't eat meat for over 14 years now... and believe it or not, I'm still alive. I think that if I can survive without meat... why should I eat it? Anyway, I guess everyone has a piece of brain, and is doing what he thinks is right. For me the right thing is to treat animals with respect. I've seen so much cruelty towards animals and I think that the comparision: abattoir = concentration camp is wellchosen. I've never seen a worst beast than human kind..., and I am not pretending to be a moral hero, I'm only human too, I can't change the world, tho I'm trying to change myself. This is sth I think is right. So I do what is right imo. Nothing more nothing less.

PS. I think that the biggest problem of any society is that it's easier for them to take things as they are than to try and change them. Like for some it's easier to believe in god than think for themselves (imo).

I definitely agree. And : :) Just think about the Genesis - ... and God said:
"Man may rule the world." (I don´t know the right translation).
And it seems that mankind is the most successful beast the world has ever seen.
So why shouldn´t this animal use other animals for its purpose?
Animals don´t have any moral categories - so why should man be ethical in his
behaviour towards its cattle. Well, I don´t think that cattle is always treated in
the right way, but if the chicken for example are treaten wrong I don´t want it
to change because the chicken would be doing better, but because I want this
chicken to be a healthy "product" for mans´ nutrition.
By the way:
In a world with billions of people without enough food or other bad living conditions it is - in my eyes - a bit perverd to think of animal-"rights" ( they don´t have any rights in the Germand Constitution
because they are treated like things - even though ecological aspects have to play a certain role).

I am sorry, but I am no longer a candidate of idealism. (bad experiences in politics)
As a consequence I can´t agree with idealistic people any longer;
please don´t take it "personal" - that´s no personal offense.

I have lost any idealism.

I'm an atheist, so the bible is not much of an authority for me. Tho, because every day I must deal with lots of strange philosophical theories, I had to read the "holy" pages (damn bloody ones). But if for you the religion is somehow important then I'm sure you've heard about a person called Saint Francis of Assisi who's a patron of animals (brotherhood of all creatures) and environment (...)

Respect for animals is not about any ideology (tho, I don't look at this in such categories), it's a matter of an individual character. And there are lots of things that ppl could learn from animals...

Also, there's not much of a common sense in the sentence you wrote: "In a world with billions of people without enough food or other bad living conditions it is - in my eyes - a bit perverd to think of animal-"rights" (...)" - cause there's simply no need to choose one instead of the other. Helping animals, and respecting their rights does not exclude helping ppl. The truth is that production of animals for food is far more expensive than production of plants. If all the money that go into meat industry could be spend for veg food, the world would have much more food for everyone. The problem is that the meat industries will never let it happen, cause ppl who rule them don't want to bancrupt... and so on.

I'm not an idealist in that matter, I said: I know I can't change the world, I'm trying to change myself; and I don't force anyone to do what I do (it never works this way). But for sure I'm a realist. Money rule the world.

"...And never a human voice comes near
To speak a gentle word:
And the eye that watches through the door
Is pitiless and hard:
And by all forgot, we rot and rot,
With soul and body marred.

(...)

And all men kill the thing they love,
By all let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!"
