I live near Chicago, and I have been into this kind of music for about 17 years. I do agree with Lushmachine on several areas, but there are really only 2 clubs that are worthwhile to go to. They are Exit and Neo. I have always preferred European music. I started along time ago with bands like Depeche Mode, the Cure, andNew Order. I think I was 15, but then it changed to much darker music. I still listen to this today. Almost every industrial show is sold out here. But you might be right in some aspects, because some of my friends did not know about Covenant or VNV Nation until I introduced them.

And there are many superficial scenesters as one of you called them... maybe you already read it in this forum: female covenant-fans from Germany are frequently pissed of by Eskil-groupies who don´t really care about the Covenant-music (and who always stand in the first row during live-concerts).
- our dark past (the federal republic of Germany):
Maybe I can explain why kleineRatte kind of excused herself for listening to MM.
MM uses a style that refers to fascist uniforms (and Rammstein are quite martial, too - moreover they used a Leni Riefenstahl-film for the "stripped"-video).
You can´t simply do this in Germany! There is a big sensibilty for glorifying or only using fascist-symbols or the special fascist aesthetic. Lately even producing(!) well known logos like the (esp. for punks) quite popular "swastika-forbidden"-emblem (for example on pins or tees) has been restricted by some courts.
Using such symbols (runs) openly is under penalty.
And if a band like rammstein plays with such symbols/ aesthetic (in order to get a big publicity) this is what happens: every major print-medium and all the other medias go crazy and it goes like this: "They´re all nazis!" "They have to be forbidden!"
Af first even the little flame-symbol of VNV Nation was a problem to me (because it was used by the Italian fascists). You see, we have a bad conscience over here.

No, I don't care if MM likes to provoke people with this uniforms. It's obvious that he does not want to do something else. And he is an American, so why should I feel ashamed?
I'm just afraid his music is not quite what you would call big art, that's all.![]()

Lushmachine, I agree that Neo was horrible that night. I stayed for about 30 minutes.

All of you Europeans that feel guilty about the past, it is not your fault. Although some of my relatives were killed during the Holocaust, I hold no grudges.

Ok, I am no groupie but, damn it, I usually make sure to be in the front row because I am tight with my money. If I pay $30 for a standing room only show, I had better have a fantastic view. I want the singer to spit on me, that's how close I want to be!![]()

Especially teens in the US and Germany do have similar problems (life-crises) -
lately I had the possibility to (re)live my puberty-"problems" because I spent two weeks with my family - including my little brothers who is 15 - and the biggest
surprise was: he is listening to rammstein now (and as we understand all their songtexts it isn´t just another band with music that drives the parents mad - thought not ours - but one has to be really "baaaaaad" :-] if he listens for example to "du hasst".![]()

And the same goes for styles: like in the US many teens just listen to a certain kind of music because it´s related to a "cool" style and it´s very often only this
"seen and be seen"-thing (or face-managing as you might call it).

Well, I don´t know that much of the german gothscene, but I have been into the rave-scene before and ravers do dance differently - that´s what I had to discover when I first went into a goth-club and danced like I always had done in elcetronic/techno clubs (I guess I looked like a was hyperactive due to some interesting substances) . Gothic-dance is much slower while ravers on the dancefloor very often look like they´re in a gym.

- developement of subcultures
I got the impression (like someone of you who mentioned I-tunes) that the internet/ modern media "globalize" even the subcultures (and no longer only the mainstream).

-Europe and music
Someone posted, that in Europe it´more about the love of music?
Zitat
Well, I don´t know but I hope so.
I guess you know that Europeans quite regularly think of many US-citizens as nice but in a way superficial. And maybe it´s in a more superficial way in which they "consume" music. But I´m quite sure that most of the users in this forum make an exception as far as music is concerned.

The word that I feel describes the size of the Chicago scene is large. I stop short of saying "huge" because there are a lot of nightclubs and shows here on a constant basis but it's also a decently tight knit scene. There's a feeling of knowing pretty much everyone through someone within three degrees of separation despite the fact that there are thousands of us. Most clubs in Chicago play mainstream, highly marketable music and Chicago has a huge nightclub scene in general. However, we're a spoiled Gothy bunch. There are a few clubs and large bars that are not only exclusively "goth" in music and style but also open seven nights per week. In addition, we have long running monthly events, the most popular of which is Nocturna.

Yes, I do know that Europeans generally think of Americans in this way. I wouldn't call any of the people I associate with "superficial" by any means, as that isn't a quality that I personally am attracted to in a person, so maybe I'm a little biased and insulated from that.

Your scene is big and devoted, ours is big and fickle, and then there's Portland, OR- small but devoted.
Aaand then there's NYC, where Albion was apparently closed *again!* But being it's NYC there's always stuff to do.

I have friends in Portland, OR but the scene doesn't attract me much when I travel there. Usually when I'm out there or Seattle I tend not to go out to clubs. When I'm out Northwest I'm much more content going to the coast or exploring the moss laden forests.![]()

The best times I've ever had in NYC were at house parties and photoshoot after parties. I've also got very distorted memories from Batcave but I think I had fun.

Right on!
Isn't is always fun when late comers try and sneak into front rows? My theory is that they see I've got a smile on my face so they think I'm a pushover. I might be nice and generally courteous ... but ... I'm not giving up my spot. No matter who the band.![]()

Watching Clas on stage was extremely entertaining so I wonder what Daniel will do to get my attention! Eskil's great and all but I like having a choice of who to watch on stage. Keeps me from singing too much.![]()
