Original von Eskil
... and perhaps you want to check out Zelda: Ocarina of time for N64. I am playing it now on Gamecube.

Thanks a lot for that tip, Eskil!
It is really a cute game. :-]

Is the version for Gamecube very different from the N64 one?

*goes on playing*

But... but... where's Ocarina?!?? 8o 8o 8o

And I like the Turok series. Yeah, yeah, I know- everyone but me thinks it's crap. I like it. Turok Evolution did really suck though. Pretty, but sucky gameplay and controls.

I totally agree with you about Doom 64, GoldenEye, and StarFox 64. Though Slippy got on my last nerve. "Slippy! Get back here!" Screw it- I just let him go! I got sick of saving his whiny little ass...

Oh, and Yoshi's Story. Though I'm about 30 years older than its intended target marketing group, it's still a good game.

And MarioKart 64! SO much fun. Mario 64 was really fun too.

Zelda was ok, but not my favorite. I've never been a fan of RPG games.

The age-old debate of yore!

I don't consider Zelda an RPG at all. There's no stats, no leveling up, etc. Yeah there's abilities based on objects but even FPS with no RPG elements have that. To me, Zelda is a 3rd person adventure series. Can you share why you consider it an RPG? I've always wondered if maybe there was something I was missing, definition-wise...

Zelda 64 DID have a more 3rd person action/adventure style than its predecessors, but I still don't like most RPG's. I did also say that Zelda was OK, so I didn't say I hated it. It just doesn't make it as one of my personal favorites. It's a great game, just not a game I've played for hours and hours. It's not a game I have skipped school for. I just don't have that same relationship to games that others have. I was fed from the age of 4 with Duke Nukem, Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3d, Stunt Racer and those games. I early on developed a closer relationship to action-oriented games than with graphical adventures or RPG's. Zelda just didn't give me what I wanted in a game. I've always wanted either futuristic environments or guns. Zelda gave me neither. This was a question of my personal experience and taste. I don't say RPG's or Zelda in general are bad games, I just say I don't like them as much as the games I have developed a closer relationship with.

That makes sense. I don't think I've ever skipped work to play a game. Or school, back in the day. I must agree with you also in that I do not like many RPGs. And I don't play WoW. Though I did play Kingdom of Loathing online a while back as a Seal Clubber and that was fun...

But most RPGs I find really boring and repetitive. But then it's perfectly reasonable that someone else could say that about the FPS genre to be fair.

You know what I want? I want a Dreamcast. So I can play Seaman. I'd buy a Dreamcast someday just for that one game!

WoW is one of those games I just don't understand. I understand that people get hooked and pay a lot of money for it, I just don't understand why.
There is no bosses or end to the game, so there really isn't any reward for leveling up all the time and honing your skills. It's just an endless circle. How people can expect me to pay for that is beyond my conception.

I hear people say all FPS's are the same all the time so I understand that the conception of what a good and entertaining game is, depends highly on the person you ask. WoW might as well just serve as another way to waste time, but I'd rather play Tetris than wasting time on a game that has no ending or main quest. To me, RPG's can be quite confusing because there are too many sub quests often and nothing to focus on. It might be nonlinear and realistic, but I prefer the linear structure of games like Doom because it keeps you focused. At least that is my perception of the genre.

Also, most RPG's suffer from cliché settings such as the middle ages or a mix of science and fantasy. While RPG's like Deus Ex and Fallout focus on very unconventional settings, most RPG's follow a certain formula, the "Dungeons & Dragons" formula as like to call it, where the only characters are wizards, ogres or elves. I'd rather fight an augmented cyborg with a nanosword or a shotgun, than fighting a mage with an axe.

Maybe I'm just to much of a science-fiction junkie to really enjoy other settings.
