Excellent!! The Black Cave sent out an email a few weeks ago, I think it was, about Waregem Gothic Festival 2008 being planned for the 25-27th of July... so maybe with some luck I'll be back again for Amphi/Waregem! I hope I hope.

So keep those dates in mind... I have a sneaking suspicion you guys are probably really fun to hang out with and I think I'd like that opportunity...

We will plan the trip to see as many festivals as we can, and I think we`ll be around for about 3 weeks, so we´ll see our faces again

Covenant at Amphi

Last year at Amphi was a major let down because the 2 headline acts each day played for such a short time..

Just getting itno Front242 and wham.. they're off.. they played about 6 or 7 songs

I hope Covenant won't be cut short... we need at least an hour and 15 min out of them :-)

242 were cut short and not able to do encores through no fault of their own- Cologne has laws that prohibit loud festival music being played after a certain hour. I have a feeling that 242 were probably pissed off about this, but there's nothing they could have done. It didn't help that fans were- er, rather vocal in expressing their dissatisfaction with the short set. Due to various reasons I don't think they were able to start on time as well. It wasn't their fault.

Well that ruined the set for me and my friends.. and why shouldn't the crowd be vocal?.... when one is ripped off one must be vocal... hopefully the organisers organise bettet this year

I agree it wasn't F242's fault.. they were awesome... will Covenant be headlining or will one of the smaller (only known in Germany) bands be headlining ?

The crowd expressing their disappointment was understandable, but booing *242 themselves* was just incredibly tacky and rude. And I'm sure it made 242 feel really great (sarcasm) since they had nothing to do with it and had no choice, legally, but to stop. So sure we felt ripped off, but yelling at 242 doesn't solve anything and probably made 242 feel worse when I bet they were already unhappy with their restrictions. I notice the booing stopped on the next night after the closing act (was it Apop or FLA? Can't remember). Too bad that it was the second night that people apparently figured out that it was the *laws of Cologne* and *not* the bands or the promoters or the organizers of the festivals that dictated how long bands can play. Loud music can go to something like 10pm, I think? Perhaps someone more local can correct me...

But in any case, there are other effective ways to express dissatisfaction than yelling and screaming and booing, I think.

Anyway, I think Covenant is headlining but I am not sure at all. I am trying not to pay much attention since I can't go this time.

I need my yearly Euro-fix and I don't think I am going to get it this year.

No need to correct you as you are spot on!

This municipal noise ordinance applies to open air locations where loud music might disturb the sleep of neighbourhood.

Other open air locations don't have such restrictions because there's no neighbourhood.

Covenant plays on Saturday. Oomph! has already been stated as Headliner and Deine Lakaien is also printed in bigger letters on the bill, so I guess one of the earlier, shorter slots will get assigned to Covenant.
But on the homepage of the Amphi they say: longer playing time for the bands.
Let's see how it will work out, I wouldn't expect too much with that many bands on the bill and the obligation to shut down the PA outside quite early.

As far as I know we're not headlining any festival this year. Which actually suits me personally just fine. It's better to struggle than to be the king of the hill, quality-wise.

We actually talked about it yesterday in Helsinki and headlining is a thankless job most of the times. Unless you have a mind-boggling budget for lights and gimmicks it's hard to impress a festival audience that is numb from sensory overload. Festivals are like going to work on a Monday after vacation time: you get overwhelmed by the amount of information to process in an impossibly short period of time.

The beauty of festivals is, to me at least, the opportunity to find new things. The bands playing at painfully early slots are the underdogs. The ones making new stuff. The future. I vividly remember seeing The Young Gods by noon at the Roskilde Festival a million years ago, thinking it was the most amazing thing ever. Last year at M'era Luna the best show I saw was Warren Suicide playing around noon on the Sunday.

Noon seems to be a good time to see interesting bands that are less interested in their egos than their music. (joakim insider tip (tm) ) :-]

I think that's a main reason I liked Waregem over Amphi- too much stimulation overload. Though I liked Amphi a lot too. Having said that though...

I remember first *hearing* The Young Gods in 1991 in Prague, on cassette, by a Norwegian friend and thinking it was the most amazing thing ever!

Then many years later they played here for Only Heaven and I was in awe. Then shortly after that, Einheit Brotzmann (sp?) came through at the same venue- very small and intimate. More awe for me.

Good to remember! Presuming I make it back to Europe anytime soon.

It depends on a lot of things. But god knows I need a v a c a t i o n....
If I make it, it will be a last minute thing, I'm afraid.

But festivals for us North Americans can be kind of... mmm... overwhelming. Not sure where to go when. And if there will be room when you finally get where you want to go. Having said that, I still had a blast at both Amphi and Waregem.

My trip in confirmed

For those like me who go in the "kamikaze" way (backpack, very low budget, going where the winds takes us

), there are some useful sites you should check:

www.hospitalityclub.org

People here offer accommodation for free in their homes, a room, a couch, a sleeping bag in their living room, a tent in their yard or at least invite you a beer if you are in their city.
You have comments of people that already stayed in someone´s house for reference.
Also they have groups, and there is a group for concerts and festivals, so you can find people who are going to the same places.

I´m using this for Amphi, enjoy!

I've seen the couchsurfing site before but as a slightly paranoid single female (growing up in a city with one of the highest crime rates will do that to you), I haven't used it.

And I don't trust people I don't know in my house. Not that I mean to be unfriendly by any means- you, lepand, for example would be more than welcome to visit me- but I *am* private and I like it that way.

And not to sound all new-agey (which I am not) or cheesy or anything, but I wouldn't want the unknown variable of an unknown person's energy messing up the nice little oasis of serenity and soothingness I have going on here in my new pad.

Plus, I'm always paranoid someone would let the cats out of the house by accident and that would throw me into a conniption... nice to not have roommates any more!

Boy, what a tangent. As usual. Point being, I've heard great things about it, but I don't think I'm brave enough to use it.

I did that in 1992 when I was 19 and it was one of the best things in my life I ever did. Me and my backpack. Went there with a friend, we split after a day, and went our separate ways.

Hence began the Holley tradition of stomping around Europe by herself, exploring and exploring and meeting people and seeing stuff and having adventures... stay safe, keep your eyes and ears open, listen to your intuition, make sure you look as un-touristy as possible (or at least project confidence) - you'll have a great time.

I'm a minor, busy during that time, and no way in hell I'd be able to convince my parents to suddenly fly off with me to Germany, but have an awesome time, all ye who are attending.

As far as I know there was "only" 2 persons who made some trouble on couchsurfing.One was steeling everytime when he was visiting and an other guy was thinking it is a kind of "dating-agency".You should be aware that travelling alone or with unknown persons to unknown/strange persons is really dangerous. Travelling with your friends should be lil bit safer and maybe it is more fun coz they know what photos they have to shoot to make you smile (or make you lil bit angry :tongue: ).
